Through our fellowship with the T Lab at Tipping Point Community, we partnered with Room to Bloom, a Family Resource Center in East Oakland, and Alicia, a Room to Bloom parent with a strong counseling and mindfulness background to resolve the SEL gap through a mindfulness course. Room to Bloom became the space and Alicia the teacher.
We offered 4 1-hour “Stress Management” classes over a two-week period. While their children were in childcare, parents, in a separate room, had 40 minutes of their own mindfulness instruction including: breathing techniques, emotion identification, and reflection activities. For the next 20 minutes, children joined their parents to practice mindfulness together. It was here where parents were modeled how to teach mindfulness to their children. Each day, parents received a text message as a reminder to practice at home.
We learned: parents would sign up, they did engage with the content, and they took the tools/techniques back into their homes.
